After pick up from your hotel in Tbilisi you will be transferred to the village of Stepandtsminda where our adventure begins. With a hike a bike of approximately 2-4 hours depending on fitness level, (horses can be hired for those who’d rather have their equipment carried). After reaching Altihut at 3014 Metres around lunch time, we have a break and lunch with outstanding views of Mount Kazbek, The Glacier and whole region. Here we relax for the afternoon in anticipation of tomorrow’s epic descent. For those who would like a little activity in the afternoon we can hike to the base of the Glacier and back.
After climbing across scree for 20 mins we have two choices of descent, a difficult technical trail, with steep rock gardens, tight twisting steep switchbacks, boulder strewn alpine meadows to cross and lots of singletrack. The alternative is a less difficult yet nonetheless technical descent close to the ravine of the river, this is used by pack horses to take equipment up the mountain, it’s a long sweeping singletrack trail with some rock gardens, more negotiable switchbacks and amazing views over the valley. A good level of skill is needed for both trails along with full suss bikes.
For those who enjoy freeriding, there is a third alternative, a valley that is much more remote and offers superb opportunities to ride the whole mountain side, dropping through alpine meadows, across scree and shale rockfalls, intermittently hitting singletrack and riding long exposed ridges.
Once back down in the valley bottom our vehicles meet us for the next leg of the tour. We now head for Juta (2200 m) at the end of the Sno valley. Here we head up to our overnight at Zeta camping. After a short but strenuous climb to Zeta mountain hut, we can relax and await our delicious dinner of Georgian cuisine reminiscing about the day’s adventure.
After a delicious breakfast we head out with the bikes following a superb trail to the left and side of the valley with amazing views of Chauki Massif mountain range (3842 m) all day long. There’s a little hike a bike and a couple river crossings to bring us to the top of the valley ready for our descent all the way back to Juta. There are a couple choices from the top of the valley both offering beautiful twisting single track which can be hit at speed, once we descend to zeta there’s a couple kms steep rocky descent to Juta before another superb descent into snow valley.
